F. Institutional IPPE Rotation

1. GOALS OF THE IPPE INSTITUTIONAL COMPONENT

  1. Provide students practical experience in the operation and drug distribution systems at institutional pharmacy settings
  2. Enhance students’ development of communication skills with patients and health care professionals
  3. Introduce students to the application of scientific knowledge to the daily practice of pharmacy
  4. Encourage self-assessment of student learning and life-long learning skills
  5. Further the development of professional attitudes, behaviors and ethos

2. IPPE INSTITUTIONAL COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. Participate in the processing and dispensing of medication orders in the facility
  2. Participate in the evaluation of patient medication records
  3. Develop skills in the medication use evaluation process in the facility
  4. Observe responses to drug information requests made in the facility
  5. Interact in a professional manner with other health care professionals (nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician’s assistants, lab technicians, etc.)
  6. Identify patient specific factors that affect health, pharmacotherapy, and/or disease state management for patients served by the facility
  7. Perform calculations required to prepare, dispense, and administer medications
  8. Observe the administration of medications in a variety of settings within the facility
  9. Assist with the preparation of sterile products, where applicable
  10. Interact with pharmacy technicians in the delivery of pharmacy services
  11. Document pharmacy interventions towards improvements for patient care within the facility
  12. Assist with the implementation of proper storage of medications within the facility

3. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES FOR IPPE INSTITUTIONAL

  1. Respect and maintain the highest standards of confidentiality related to matters of patient care and practice site procedures
  2. Exhibit loyalty to both the college of pharmacy and to the pharmacy practice sites to which he or she is assigned
  3. Attend and work diligently all the assigned days of the rotation
  4. Adhere to both College of Pharmacy and other site-specific dress codes
  5. Adhere to the codes of professional pharmacist conduct
  6. Register as a pharmacy intern during the first semester of the pharmacy program
  7. Complete and maintain the certification as a Healthcare Provider of CPR
  8. Maintain professional liability insurance ($1,000,000/$3,000,000)
  9. Refuse monetary compensation from any preceptor or experiential site for the IPPE courses
  10. Maintain up-to-date immunization status for a health care professional and have current records on file with the University Health Services office
  11. Obtain yearly TB skin testing (or meet other state guidelines for tuberculosis screening)
  12. Refrain from any use or possession of any illicit drugs

4. PRECEPTOR RESPONSIBILITIES FOR IPPE INSTITUTIONAL

  1. Function as positive role models for pharmacy students
  2. Practice the profession of pharmacy ethically, legally, and with compassion for patients
  3. Possess professional training, experience, and competence in the practice of pharmacy
  4. Utilize clinical and scientific publications to make patient care decisions and provide evidence-based level of practice
  5. Possess a desire to educate others including students, patients, caregivers, other health care professionals
  6. Maintain an attitude and aptitude that facilitates learning
  7. Agree to document and assess pharmacy student performance during rotations
  8. Enjoy a systematic, self-directed approach to his/her own continuing professional development
  9. Collaborate with other health care professionals as a member of the health care team
  10. Commit to the organization, to the profession, and to the larger community
